Sapele Hardwood - Home Mihrab
Project type
Mihrab
Location
Bradford
This custom Mihrab, crafted for a private home prayer room in Bradford, embodies timeless elegance through simplicity, proportion, and masterful detail. Designed as a calm yet commanding focal point, it draws inspiration from Ottoman-era architectural traditions, where balance, clarity, and spiritual presence were paramount.
Constructed entirely from solid sapele hardwood, the Mihrab showcases the natural richness and depth of the timber’s grain. The wood is finished in Osmo oil, enhancing its warmth while allowing the material to breathe—resulting in a tactile, satin-smooth surface that will age beautifully over time.
The design centres around a clean, stepped 3D arch, subtly projecting from the wall to create depth without excess.
Framing the composition is bespoke hand-rendered Arabic calligraphy, custom designed specifically for this installation. The calligraphy panels—positioned on the left, right, and crown—are elevated with gold highlights, catching light softly and lending a dignified luminosity to each piece. Each inscription is carefully proportioned to the architecture, ensuring harmony between text, form, and space.
Circular medallions bearing sacred names further anchor the design, reinforcing spiritual focus while maintaining visual balance. Traditional wall lanterns complete the setting, casting warm light that accentuates the calligraphy and the natural character of the wood.
A bespoke creation tailored to its setting, it transforms a home prayer room into a space of reverence, calm, and enduring beauty.
