Mihrab and Feature Wall Installation - Burton-on-Trent - Staffordshire
Project type
Mihrab
Location
Burton-on-Trent
This modern Mihrab installation, designed for a mosque in Burton-on-Trent, reimagines sacred architecture through a contemporary lens—where light, geometry, and calligraphy converge to create a striking yet deeply respectful focal point for congregational prayer.
Rooted in Islamic geometric tradition, the Mihrab wall unfolds as a rhythmic field of interlocking patterns, precisely arranged to create depth, balance, and visual continuity across the space. While unmistakably modern in execution, the geometry pays homage to centuries-old principles of proportion and repetition.
At the centre, the Mihrab arch commands attention through its fully illuminated push-through acrylic calligraphy. Each letter is backlit, allowing the inscription to glow majestically—transforming sacred text into living light. This illumination not only enhances legibility but elevates the spiritual atmosphere.
Flanking the arch, calligraphy roundels bearing revered names are set into the patterned wall, each encircled by subtle LED halo lighting. These luminous rings gently draw the eye, creating moments of pause and reflection while maintaining harmony with the overall composition.
Lighting plays a central role throughout the design. Carefully integrated LED systems allow the Mihrab to shift in mood and presence—ranging from calm, ambient illumination to dramatic emphasis—without overwhelming the sanctity of the space.
For longevity and performance, every element of the Mihrab and surrounding wall feature is finished in high-quality 2-pack solvent paint, ensuring exceptional durability, colour stability, and resistance to wear in a high-use mosque environment.
This Mihrab stands as a confident expression of modern Islamic architecture—bold yet reverent, innovative yet respectful. It demonstrates how contemporary materials and lighting technologies can be seamlessly woven into sacred design, creating a timeless spiritual landmark for generations to come.
